It is hard to believe that my 10th and 11th Grade Vietnamese and foreign students at the American International School in Saigon have been using Linux blogging for about one month now. I am very impressed at how fast they were able to use Linux blogging in a short period of time.

Since all of the laptops in the computer lab only used Window’s XP, the IT Staff and I decided to install PCLinuxOS inside of the VMWare Player. The first day PCLinuxOS was installed was a big nightmare but the IT staff smoothed things out this week. Students can now log into their own individual VMWare Player accounts now. My students are learning fast. I keep them all inside terminal window with Konsole. Yes, they all know how to use the command line now. Today, they all SSH to the Teacher’s Desktop and created two web pages. Several of my IT geeks also learned how to move people’s files around as well which was very amusing.
There are now 48 new Linux users in Vietnam!

LAST spring, when Marisa L. Dudiak's second-grade class in Frederick County, Md., returned from a field trip to a Native American farm, all the students wanted to do was talk about what they saw. But instead of leading a discussion about the trip, Mrs. Dudiak had the students sign on to their classroom Web log.
There they wrote about learning to use a bow and arrow, sitting inside a tepee and petting a buffalo. The short entries were typical of second-grade writing, with misspelled words and simple sentences. Still, for Mrs. Dudiak, the exercise proved more fruitful than a group discussion or a handwritten entry in a personal journal. http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C04E5D7113FF93AA2575BC0A9629C8B63

Dominic Ouellet-Tremblay, a fifth-grade student at St-Joseph, writes: "The blogs give us a chance to communicate between us and motivate us to write more. When we publish on our blog, people from the entire world can respond by using the comments link. This way, they can ask questions or simply tell us what they like. We can then know if people like what we write and this indicate[s to] us what to do better. By reading these comments, we can know our weaknesses and our talents. Blogging is an opportunity to exchange our point of view with the rest of the world not just people in our immediate environment."2
The students at St-Joseph are reflective of a trend that is sweeping the world of online learning: the use of weblogs to support learning. And even though the world of fifth grade may seem remote to educators in the college and university system, these students, when they enter postsecondary education, may have had more experience writing online for an audience than writing with a pen and paper for a teacher. Such students will bring with them a new set of skills and attitudes. http://connect.educause.edu/Library/EDUCAUSE+Review/EducationalBlogging/40493
The ACCESS program would be a great source for the classroom if you were a secondary teacher. Your students could take the online courses during the day while they were at school. They could communicate with high schools around the state. The students could earn advanced diplomas and take classes that would go toward their college degree.

School districts can connect with any other IVC lab in Alabama so that coursework and teachers can be shared statewide. Teachers can use the video streaming for training so that they can better themselves. ACCESS can also be used for recruiting and hiring. This is an awesome resource.
There is nothing you can’t find on Alex! From the courses of study you will need to the lesson plans, it is a one stop shop. You can pick any subject. You can also pick any grade level. Alex has it all!

I had to do a project for my Classroom Management class and Alex came in handy. I clicked on lesson plans and there they were, hundreds of them. They also have web links set up so you can look at other sites. You can use Alex even if you are a student.

When I get into my class room I will use Alex all the time. Not only will I use the lesson plans and the courses of study but I will also let my students use it as well. They can even look up their Weekly Reader’s on Alex. There is a great section for special education too.

The teacher’s web links are awesome. They have a link that is just for projects. This will be a great resource to have in the classroom for everyone.

First Post

My day has been really busy today. First off, I had to take my son and my neighbor's child to school. From there I went to class. I have been in classes all day. I have been in the education building since ten o'clock this morning, except for when I went and got lunch.

My lunch was very funny. We went to eat Chinese. This guy at the buffet asked me if the lo mien was good and I said yes. That was it! Then when he left he got the waitress to give me his business card with his number on it. Yuck! Anyway, we got a good laugh out of that!
